In addition to our success being awarded £10k by the Tesco "Bags of Help" grant last month - The Park, Kilnwick has now received confirmation that we have been awarded - not 1, not 2, but 3 further funding grants! East Riding of Yorkshire Council has supported us in their “Active Creative Facility Development” Grant which will allow us to purchase a double swing and safety surfacing beneath. This the first item of our playground to be funded and is hugely exciting! The Local Postcode Lottery have supported us with a grant to fund some of the Wildlife aspects of the Park. Their grant will allow us to purchase wildflower plants, fruit trees for the community orchard, specimen native trees for the woodland planting and stakes and spiral guards for our new hedgerow. Additionally it allowed us to purchase all of the bird / bat and insect habitats recommended by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust for our site. This includes 2 Insect Hotels, 6 Bat boxes, 2 Barn Owl Boxes, 1 Kestrel box, 10 Great Tit / Sparrow boxes, 4 Blue Tit boxes and 2 open fronted bird boxes for Robins. However, CJ Wildlife has kindly agreed to donate this equipment, so the Local Postcode Lottery have kindly said we can reallocate these funds to more purchasing more trees and the creation of an outdoor classrom! We’ve also been awarded a Grant called “Celebrate England” by the Big Lottery. This was a grant to allow communities to come together to celebrate.
We applied for funds to pay for the public opening of The Park, which is now planned for the weekend of the 2nd / 3rd of September 2017. Pop the dates in your diaries! We explained that the “Grand Opening of The Park” is an opportunity for all generations in Kilnwick to celebrate together, and also to strengthen community bonds with neighbouring villages. It will allow us to showcase the community facilities and increase awareness throughout the area. It will allow us thank all the volunteers that have provided so much time to the project, and the organisations that have so kindly guided us throughout the process. We will also be able to ensure that the educational elements of the Park are promoted, and Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and The Woodland Trust will be invited to speak about the habitat creation and educational elements at the Park. We have already consulted with many Kilnwick residents, and the Youth Club guided our Celebrate application with their ideas too! The Youth Club specifically requested “zorb balls” for team games, a “coloured powder run" / assault course, an ice cream van, fancy dress competition, welly throwing and sports day races! Adults we consulted requested a super duper “Summer fete” including marquee, evening barn dance, brass band during the daytime event and barn dance band for the evening celebration, vintage car and tractor display and “handicrafts / baking” competitions. We are also planning wildlife talks and a wildlife workshop (including habitat creation) to leave long lasting wildlife and educational benefits (as well as having lots of fun). The plans for the Celebration are still fluid, and we will be holding drop in sessions and meetings to plan the celebration further. In the meantime though please email us!
